BUNKERS

The bunkers are raised so that they are always visible. They have a very rugged topography and raised edges. Their size, shape and number vary a great deal, to give each hole its own personality.
The siting of the bunkers on the fairways generally poses a problem even for the most powerful golfers; more average players have a more open, wider reception area.

FAIRWAYS

Both courses have been designed like parks. Thanks to the comprehensive irrigation system covering the entire site, all the land inside the boundaries of the two courses has been planted with grass and is maintained like a fairway. The lakes, bunkers and a small number of existing trees are the main obstacles.

GREENS

The average area of the greens on the largest course is 550 m² but it may vary considerably. The various uses of bunkers and mounds emphasise the highly individual character of each hole. Every green has been designed to give 4 to 7 possible flag locations. The greens on the short course are all identical. However, they have an area 5 to 10% smaller than the area of the greens on the long course and they are less contoured. There are more grassy mounds and dips but fewer bunkers than on the long course.

TEES

The tees on the long course have an average area of 700 to 800 m² . Depending on the length of each hole, the starting tee for professionals and the starting tee for women may be separated by a distance of as much as 120 metres . Natural features (lakes, roughs and marshes) create greater obstacles in game strategy from the furthest tees rather than from the closest tees. Particular attention has been paid to the angles of shots from each tee, even at identical distances, creating “different” holes depending on the tee selected.

CLUB HOUSE

To provide a welcome for golfers, the club house has been built in the same style as the famous pyramids. It stands at the entrance to the golf course, next to the three-star hotel. With an area of 2,400 m² on two floors, it has all the amenities required for a successful golf course, including a restaurant.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM

The irrigation system in the golf course at La Grande Motte is probably the largest on the continent of Europe . 58 subsidiary control panels operate some 2,200 sprinklers.
